It should be called the summer of humiliation for Meghan Markle.
Despite signing with mega talent agency William Morris Endeavor (WME) in late April, Meghan has little to show for it. From Spotify dropping her flop of a podcast “Archetypes” to the disastrous reaction to her fake paparazzi chase story in New York City, nothing is coming up roses for Meghan.
And it’s not going to get better anytime soon.
Despite announcing their partnership in April, WME has yet to secure any new deals for the former actress and Duchess, which isn’t good for the couple’s future. In the PR world, the best way to address negative publicity is to float a positive story or, in the case of Spotify, to announce that Meghan had moved on to one of their competitors. But given that Archewell and Meghan’s team floated the idea of making more content for the “Archetypes” audience and no one cared, it’s abundantly clear that her podcast career is over. Harry’s, of course, never began.
All focus has now turned to Netflix, where the couple were expected to rake in upwards of $100 million on the back of Meghan’s creative juices. It seems like that deal is on the brink of faltering as well. The writers and actors strike has crippled the entertainment industry, which is bad news for the Sussexes as Meghan was already crippled in the talent and creativity department. How can she even attempt to create a new scripted show without the ability to hire out all the creative talent given her own inability to perform in this area? The answer: she can’t.
As Hollywood is being driven to its knees, Meghan Markle is already there, and perhaps that is why so many rumors are in the air about divorce, hotel rooms and moving.
Though coming to Hollywood and trying to make her way in the entertainment industry yet again was entirely Meghan’s plan, she still couldn’t hack it, even with a prince and a title. At this point, what other purpose does he serve? She doesn’t want to reconnect with her royal relatives nor does she want to leave the California sunshine for the dreary English countryside. They are essentially stuck.
If Meghan is ready to kick Harry to the curb and find a bigger fish, it seems like the inevitable outcome to a relationship that was based on greed and hubris, not love.
Of course, this will result in difficulties for her children, who will likely suffer the indignity of being stripped of their royal titles later in life by their uncle rightly claiming a desire to streamline the monarchy from hangers on and irrelevant members.
There’s also her husband, who was deeply in love with the idea of Meghan Markle, the sexy, successful actress who could help him escape from his gilded cage, only for her to place him in the more stifling, demanding and yet shallow cage of Hollywood. In a vain attempt to sooth his own ego and surpass his brother, he as failed on multiple levels and has become the focus of derision and mockery while his brother steps into his destiny with cheers and admiration.
Perhaps even the idea of love will suffer. The couple have always told the world they have the greatest love story, even beginning their Netflix series with Harry stating as much.
But as it turns out, Meghan’s love wasn’t for him or the kids as much as it was for the influence and life provided by her husband’s royal title and how she could leverage that in Hollywood. Once that’s become useless, they can only go in their separate ways.
Meghan’s story somewhat mimics the punishment of the Greek mythological character of Sisyphus. A man who cheated death several times and angered the gods. As eternal punishment, he was forced to roll a boulder up a hill every day only to have it roll back down moments before he reaches the top.
The brand of “Meghan Markle” is much like that boulder, destined to be rolled up the hill, only to see it slide back down again and again and again and again.
