Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima Confirm Coronation Attendance
Former queen Princess Beatrix and future queen Princess Catharina-Amaila will attend a reception at Buckingham Palace the evening before the Coronation
The Dutch King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima have confirmed their attendance at the Coronation of King Charles III, in addition to his mother and former queen Princess Beatrix and daughter and future queen Catharina-Amalia attending an evening reception the day before. These are the latest confirmed royal attendees at the historic event, which will occur roughly 10 years after then Prince Charles attended Willem-Alexander’s inauguration as king after his mother’s voluntary abdication.
In the last weeks leading up to King Charles’ coronation, it appears that more royals have now officially announced their place on the guest list. The latest are the royal family of the Netherlands, with a rather surprising guest: the young Princess of Orange.
As a royal families, the Dutch and the British have a long history, going back to at least 1689, when the Glorious Revolution resulted in Dutch Prince William of Orange installed on the English throne with his wife Princess Mary after his Catholic father-in-law King James II frustrated the Protestant-minded House of Parliament. Perhaps their most famous disagreements as kingdoms was over the famed Stuart Diamond, a 40-carat light blue diamond that now sits atop the Stuart Tiara, which Maxima first debuted during the couple’s first state visit to the U.K. as king and queen in October 2018.
Willem-Alexander became king in 2013, after this mother Beatrix abdicated, which has become tradition in the monarchy. His daughter and heir Catharina-Amaila is just starting to dip her toes into royal duties. She did her first foreign tour of the Dutch Caribbean earlier this year, and attended her first tiara event in Norway for the 18th birthday of Princess Ingrid Alexandra. She started university in September, but faced serious challenges after there were threats to her safety.
The Dutch royals will join with King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain, King Carl Gustaf and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco and more.
